Mammography is the imaging of the breast and can be acquired using conventional film-screen, CR, and DR technology. The positioning of the patient is very important in the performance of the mammographic examination. The anatomical positioning is precise, the compression component is critical and the exposure must be correct. Compression is used to create a "homogeneous" field for the x-ray beam to penetrate. This allows for the entire breast to be imaged with no thick or thin parts that will lose resolution or be over- or under-exposed.
